Alex Deems at Crowded Castle

Alex Deems is a cover musician and singer / songwriter performing everything from classics to contemporary Rock and Pop favorites.  His unique style is best described as Alternative Rock / Indie,  though he draws inspiration from a number of genres.  Alex fondly recalls growing up with a musical family.  "From a young age I would always hear my uncle play guitar and sing.  One night at a party, I went over to him and asked him how to play.  He taught me some chords and I took it from there!"  He then started fine tuning his guitar playing skills while studying Youtube videos and taking notes on bands like Pearl Jam, Van Halen, and Foo Fighters.

Alex feels at home on stage.  His first public performance was a talent competition that he ended up winning!  "Performance is the celebration of emotion and music.  It should be a party and it should be entertaining, but at the same time it should make the listener feel something important." He knew early that he wanted to perform in front of as many people as possible as often as possible.

Meet the Brewers Night

Mark S. - Started his love for beer as a student at University of Wisconsin, where beer was the drink of choice no matter the age.

Then introduced to home brew, way back when no one was doing that, while in seminary under the mentorship of a brilliant yet whacky Theology Professor (of German descent…of course).

Then life happened, jobs, kids, relocations etc…

Years later landed in a subdivision where neighbors gathered and the home brew fever was reignited.

Then returned to his University of Wisconsin roots to study Brewing and Malting Science with the Master Brewers Association of America.

Got more involved in the brewery world through Brewers of PA and the Master Brewers Association as well as partnering with a local with a home brew business and taught some classes.

All the while the home brew club got better and better and they said, "We can do this, let’s open a brewery"!

And that is the readers digest version of Mark S, Brewer at Crowded Castle.

Fran M. - Let’s say he acquired a taste for beer at an early age (Thanks Pop!). Fran began home brewing in 1994, when he purchased his first home brew kit from a new store that opened on Darby Road in Havertown, Pennsylvania called the Brew Your Own Beer store. The owners of the store must have paid a consulting firm a lot of money to come up with that name, because 25 years later BYOB is still providing home brew supplies to the home brewers in Delco and the surrounding areas.

As like Mark S. life happened, jobs, kids, relocations, travel sports and softball. As one would suspect, softball was where Fran honed his affinity for beer, frequenting the many wonderful establishments in Delaware County like Pops Barrel Inn, Brownies Pub, Barnaby’s, The Goal Post, Craigs Tavern, The Willowbrook Pub and The Milmont Inn, just to name a few. Many hours were spent sampling the fine brews provided by these establishments.

As fate would have it, Fran M. and his family moved into the same development/ subdivision as Mark S. where the same neighbors gathered and the home brew fever was reignited.

Fran M. has joined with these neighbors and accepted the challenge of opening a commercial brewery. Fran’s expertise comes from many, many years of field research and many, many years of home brewing, plus the experience of the past few years at Crowded Castle.

Cheers!

Mark G - Mark G’s ground zero passion for beer probably started in the 1980’s at Zeno’s in State College (Sorry Rathskeller! Go Blue!). In the early 1990’s, he and his family moved to Downingtown. Mark and Ellen, his wife, heard of this new place opening up in the borough and went to check it out. Victory Brewing Company certainly created a buzz for beer for Mark and Ellen, who frequented the joint often in the early days. Mark joined the neighborhood home-brew scene and soon realized this group was the real deal. The hobby grew from a successful contract brew to a fun and inviting taproom / brewery in the heart of Phoenixville. Mark consumes industry knowledge from the Master Brewers Association research as well as the local craft liquid itself. Mark’s favorite style id the Irish Red Ale.

Karl - Karl is from northern Illinois and move to West Chester via Wiesbaden, Columbia, SC, Munich and lastly Austin, TX. From an IT background, he started the USciences Brewing Science Program in 2016, and graduated in March 2018.

He came to the Castle as a lowly intern in September 2017. From there we kinda couldn’t get rid of him.

Karl will be setting up our lab. He is currently brewing, cellaring, canning and generally doing all wonderful stuff needed to bring you excellent Castle beer.

Alex O'Brien at Crowded Castle

Alex O’Brien is a multitalented musician specializing in performing both recognizable cover tunes and original compositions, delivering aural satisfaction to anyone within an earshot. Shockingly, his first performance was at the age of three! He backed his father, also a musician, playing drums for their rendition of “Honky Tonk Woman” by The Rolling Stones. It wasn’t until the age of 15 though, that Alex played guitar on stage. After that, he became very active, performing whenever possible throughout high school. Coffee shops, benefit concerts, and various school functions were all fair game. By the age of 20 Alex started showcasing his talent professionally at a multitude of venues.
